AFK

I don’t know if you saw it, but in one of the episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon introduces Penny to the world of gaming. Needless to say, Penny gets hooked and can’t seem to stop playing. I won’t spoil the story for you, but at one point Sheldon tries to talk to her. She gets annoyed, speaking into her microphone says, ‘AFK boys’ and stops playing the game. That’s when I learned what that AFK is an acronym for “away from keyboard”.

Ok, so what does this have to do with articles about staying active and being healthy?

Ok, ok, I’m getting there…

When I started exercising (after about 15 years of sitting at my desk for at least 12 hours) I began to experience what the hype was about. I felt better, minor aches were gone, I looked better and I began to want to avoid unhealthy foods. Ok, just a little bit.

Now, let’s not get crazy, our website is focused on how to stay active enough to meet the guidelines, not go nuts. And believe me, it was hard work and it took about a month that seemed endless to not be so very difficult, but I really did begin to feel better and have more confidence. And being from a large family, sharing is a way of life for me – I had this great information and I needed to share it with all the people that work sedentary jobs that say “exercise for me – haha”, knowing full well that it’s not funny. That was me.

Well that led to the ProfessionalsHealthConnection website. As you can imagine, researching and writing articles each week about the things that I have been curious about for years has been a huge help to keep me on track.

So, my goal when I started writing articles was to provide you with weekly encouragement to help you get and stay active. After a request to help seniors, I started to write a special series called SF: – senior fitness – which is slightly larger font and the printable exercises for seniors (also slightly larger font) so the are easily read. Again, my goal was to provide these weekly.

Well for the past week, I’ve been AFK. Not only have I been AFK, but if there’s an acronym for “away from gym” AFG or “away from exercise” AFE, I’m guilty of those as well. I do plan on making up for some of that tomorrow, and you can always visit our Exercises and Senior Fitness Exercises to keep active!

Why were we AFK? Well, as you can see at the bottom of the website, we are in Pearland, Texas (a wonderful place about 12 miles outside of Houston – you’d love it!) and were hit with Hurricane Harvey. I have to say that during the past week, I have witnessed an experience of a lifetime. The rain never seemed to end. Thankfully my family and I, and the people that help with our website, have been unaffected by the storm – no major damage or flooding and no electricity outages. But, needless to say, there are many, many people in southern Texas and Louisiana that have been terribly affected by all of this and my heart goes out to them.

I also want to share that I have witnessed kindness, generosity and the outpouring of genuine concern from people all over the world. I also saw the  Fire and Police rescue workers that selflessly put others before themselves and how they left their families to help others – that has been humbling. I cannot say enough about the people that offered their services, donations and prayers and have made us believe even more deeply in the innate desire of people to do good.

Thank you to all of those that help others! There’s a place in heaven for you, of that I’m sure.

Thank you for visiting with us – we wish you the best of health!
