Don’t forget to Breathe When Exercising

Want optimal performance while exercising? It’s simple – Breathe.

Inhale… Exhale… We breathe every day and have done this all our lives. We’re experts – right? Or are we?

Of course, you breathe when you exercise, but have you ever struggled with that one last rep and found that you were actually holding your breath? Not good. Never, ever hold your breath – it’s like depriving your body of food when you are starving and there’s a feast right in front of you.

And, are you aware of HOW to breathe when you exercise? Have you found that focusing on your breathing is not easy as knowing how to breathe properly, then actually doing it for every rep? I’ll get to the specifics in a minute, but have you ever found yourself actually doing more reps then you thought you could – all because you were focused on breathing properly?

How’d that happen? Well, one simple explanation is that it’s tougher than it sounds but there’s more to it than that. Watch the video below for the specifics (less than 4 minutes), then give it a try with your next workout, and you’ll see what I mean. Oh, and let me know how you make out with this – please let me know I’m not the only one that finds breathing properly during exercise a bit of a challenge.

With Every Breathe – Breath Efficiently…

Efficient breathing is critical because it delivers much-needed oxygen to our bodies. This is especially needed during a workout, or any exercise. Proper breathing can actually help you exercise longer with less effort. Additionally, proper breathing can calm you, whether you are exercising or sitting at your desk, diligently working away. BTW – that’s another time when you need to focus on your breathing. Have you ever been so wrapped up in your work that you realize that your breathing is shallow? Even while sitting – working or at rest, remember to take deep breaths – you’ll want to give your body plenty of the oxygen it craves. And it will help your mind stay focused because it craves oxygen when it’s working hard too!

There are many benefits to taking deep breaths and breathing properly. By concentrating on breathing, you’ll increase your body awareness. Additionally, focusing on your breathing allows you to ease into your routine.

And experts seem to agree that proper breathing techniques vary based on the type of exercise you are doing.

  • Cardio / Endurance Exercises – take deep breaths and get into a rhythm.
  • Running / Endurance Exercises – breathe deeply and in a rhythm.
  • Weight / Strength Training – breathe out when your muscles are contracted (this is the hardest part of the exercise) and breath in when you return to the starting position.
  • Stretching / Flexibility Exercises – breathe deeply and in a rhythm.
