Physical Activity, What’s the Big Deal

Here’s WHY it’s such a BIG Deal…

Regular exercise and physical activity are important to the physical and mental health of almost everyone. Big, small, fat, skinny, young and old alike. Being physically active can help you continue to do the things you enjoy and stay independent.

And like everything in life, if something is worth having, it’ll take effort. The bigger the effort, the sweeter the reward. The bigger the reward, the more we are likely to keep doing it. But, the mind rules so you must make exercise a habit by repeating it often enough to become a habit. I’ve heard that 30 days works for most people.

Regular physical activity over long periods of time can produce long-term health benefits. That’s why health experts say that adults should be active every day to maintain their health.

In addition, regular exercise and physical activity can reduce the risk of developing some diseases and disabilities that can develop over time. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for many chronic conditions. For example, studies show that people with arthritis, heart disease or diabetes benefit from regular exercise.

Exercise also helps people with high blood pressure, balance problems or difficulty walking. And, even better – there are many ways to be physically active, there’s virtually no limit. You can be active in short spurts throughout the day, or if you like a schedule in your life, set aside specific times on specific days of the week.

Many physical activities – such as walking upstairs, brisk walking, even raking leaves, are free or low-cost and don’t require special equipment.

Be creative and check out a YouTube exercise video or setup a gym in your home. Be sure to use your home gym though, otherwise it may collect dust or worse, the clothes you wore today.

In the coming weeks we’ll show you many types of exercise and physical activity as well as tips to help you be active in ways that suit your lifestyle, interests, health and budget.

Whether you’re just starting out, getting back into exercising after a break, or fit enough to run a 3-mile race, you’ll want to check with your Doctor before starting an exercise regime.

Being active is for everyone (with the Doctor’s approval). People that are healthy and those who live with an ongoing health problem or disability. We promise you’ll be glad you use the time to invest in YOU as you see your physical quality of life improve over time.

Congratulations on taking this important first step!
